Cornerstones Brought Up Again
Dave Barrera Editor in chief Yet another discussion took place about the Cornerstones report at Tuesdays Academic Senate meeting. Dr. Tom Young fielded questions about the paper. The Senate is trying to wrap up its dealings with this subject. One major topic was the definition of education. The Senate was concerned that it wasnt looked at with a business sense, but rather as a process. Were not just putting a stamp on their foreheads and sending them out, Speaker-elect Jim Tuedio said. Other points included access to CSUs and remediation. Ideas were given suggesting that there should be more alliance with junior colleges regarding the remediation. Dr. Andy Young, chair of the faculty development committee, presented a proposal for a Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning. Its been a need for the faculty for a long time, Young said. It has a direct payoff to students. The plan calls for faculty to have access to help in a variety of areas. Some include grant writing, consultations on class structuring, and support for innovation in teaching and learning. The proposal will need to seek funds for the project. While some could be available after consolidating programs, Young will need to work with the Provost to gain start-up capital. Provost Dr. Richard Curry spoke about two open positions on campus. Last week, two applicants for the director of grants and sponsored programs were on campus. There will be an announcement as to who will get the job next week. The position was formerly held by Fran Jeffries. The other position is that of interim dean of extended and regional education. The search for the replacement for this job will take place only in California. his position isnt one that can be put off for a few months, Provost Curry said. There should be a new person in this job by the end of November, he stated. The job title is being upgraded from director to dean so that the person can participate in the board of deans and work closer with the Provost. A nation-wide search will take place to find a permanent replacement.
