Michael Mello
News Editor Seven local students met in the North Dining
Hall on Oct. 21 to discuss their academic progress with President Marvalene
Hughes. Those seven students represented a total of 24 recipients of the
CSU Stanislaus Presidents Academic and Leadership Scholarships. Created
in 1995, the scholarship is aimed at attracting some of the local talent
such as class valedictorians and senior class presidents to CSUS that may
otherwise have been lost to other universities. You represent my project,
Hughes said. She then proceeded to question them about what is, for most
of them, their first semester at a university. Each student answered queries
from the president that ran the gamut from particular majors to how he
or she liked the university. Few said they were involved with the universitys
extra-curricular activities. I like the fact that the science labs are
not being taught by students, Joseph Kolody, Beyer High valedictorian,
said. This is a gratifying experience for them, Hughes said.
