CSUS Ventures to Ethiopia

Patricia Perry Signal Staff In Ethiopia, where camels are an accepted mode of transportation, CSU Stanislaus is in a partnership with the American University of Ethiopia to transport and share knowledge and training. The university is the first of its kind in Ethiopia. Modeled after and nourished by CSU Stanislaus, the university is scheduled to open in 1998. "For CSU Stanislaus, this is an opportunity to expand our goal to provide global learning at our university, said CSUS President Marvalene Hughes. The AUE ground-breaking ceremony, held Oct. 5, marked new ground for higher education in Ethiopia. Hughes attended with Linda Bunney-Sarhad, director of the institute for international studies, and Donald Johnson, an adjunct professor of public heath. Johnson was instrumental in CSUS's initial involvement in the project at the invitation of Ethiopian leaders. CSUS will use $28,000 to promote the new campus. The money was donated for this specific purpose. Dr. Hughes and the founding investors, Daniel Mebrahtu of Ethiopia and Nabih Badawi of Jordan, signed the agreement in Ethiopias capital city, Addis Abba. We especially appreciate the willingness of CSUS to provide curriculum and policies already available, which we can adopt or adapt to our local needs, Mebrahtu said. Input to curriculum development and exchange of faculty and students will strengthen both sides, as together we consider how higher education can strengthen the prosperity and social responsiveness of a country. Programs will promote overseas studies for students who want to study in Ethiopia. I am very concerned about exposing our students to global education, said Hughes. Faculty who come to carry out projects in a country such as Ethiopia find that they must question their very approach to their discipline, said Bunny-Sarhad. I am encouraged in this large undertaking by the convection that the development of human potential both in Ethiopia and on our own campus will be enormous. AUE, Ethiopias first private institution of higher learning, will offer business management, accounting, and finance courses. Other disciplines will be added later.
