A.S. Senate Question Budget

Michael Mello News Editor A basic review of the Associated Students budget turned into an hour-and-a-half long squabble about expenditure details during their weekly meeting Tuesday night. A.S. Administrative Director Denise Hopkins and Vice President of Finance Andrea Cordeniz made a review presentation to the senate on this years $331,158 A.S. budget. With a looming referendum and fee raise for the A.S. at stake, Hopkins and Cordeniz wanted to give answers to senators so they (senators) are able to explain to students where their fee dollars get spent. Students have asked about A.S.s expenditures, Hopkins said. This is for your information, so you know how the A.S. spends money. We are slightly below average for the CSU system, Hopkins said of the A.S. current fee. Weve done a pretty good job keeping our fees moderate. The A.S. has placed a proposal on the referendum asking students to approve a $7.50 increase in the A.S. fee for fall and spring semester enrollees. After Hopkins brief overview presentation, Cordeniz began a more detailed analysis of the budget. It wasnt long before questions about spending surfaced. Senator Patricia Alvarez demanded to know why Culture Week funding had been canceled, which Hopkins and Cordeniz had to explain at length. After other inquiries on specific expenditures came up, Hopkins suggested that the senators put off their questions until theopen forum portion of the agenda. The budget had already been set for the year, and without the items being placed on the agenda, nothing could be changed, she said.
